Issue No. 5
Welcome to The Flairhunter Edit, where I share all the flair on my radar each month. If you love what you see, forward the flair to a friend!
It’s a big month for me. It’s my birthday - Leo Season! I’m turning 58, and while many people my age keep their age semi-secret, I announce mine unapologetically, with pride. And, also, with more than a bit of disbelief. I’m proud of what I’ve overcome to get here and grateful for ALL the opportunities, people in my life, and the good fortune that has carried (or dragged!) me to this stage of life. Much of it has been magical, some of it painful.
My mom was about my age when she died suddenly, and even that plays a role in how I’m feeling about arriving at this age. But, I once heard a saying about scar tissue being the strongest, toughest tissue, so when I look at the physical scars or think about the emotional ones, I love reminding myself of this. Scars are interesting and always come with a story to tell.
I'm also attending my 40th high school reunion in Bellingham, WA, this month. It's hard to believe I was in high school FOUR decades ago. It makes me so nostalgic. Those four years of high school that seemed like the most important years ever back then quietly slipped into a mere blip on the radar. But they were somehow so, just, everything. It was such a time of shaping, learning, and evolving. Some people blow off their reunions, but I am excited to attend mine; to reconnect with people I knew and get to know others better, who I barely knew back then. While I can acknowledge the downsides of social media and the time suck of it all, it really is such a powerful tool for keeping us connected. Without that, I wouldn't be able to stay up-to-date on the events in the lives of my Sehome High School (Go Mariners!) classmates.
The reunion coincides with my birthday weekend and I cannot think of a better way to spend it; with my sister and niece up in the Northwest and my fierce tribe of high school besties who still live there. I’m getting in the mood by listening to my 80s playlist on repeat. It's complete with every Def Leppard, ACDC, Pat Benetar, Talking Heads, Devo, and Big Country song (yes, I am musically well-rounded like that), bringing back vivid, pointed memories of exactly where I was, maybe what I was wearing, and who I was with when we listened to them.
Music, birthdays, and high school reunions. Powerful memories that all go hand in hand. What things make you nostalgic, or what were your favorite and least favorite things about the 1980s? Personally, I’m happy to be done with the big hair and oversized shoulder pads...

Design Tip
A one-of-a-kind (or seemingly one-of-a-kind) statement chair can be as interesting as fine art to round out a room. Don’t get hung up on whether the style is exactly like the other upholstered pieces or case goods in your home. Think about it: a little vignette comprised of an occasional chair, a cocktail table, a lamp, and a piece of art hanging nearby - the whole moment is, well, a moment! A beautiful snapshot.
Some of my favorites are from flea markets or local shops found during my travels. If the price is more than you planned on, you can justify it knowing it could be passed down and appreciated by future generations! Online resources like 1st Dibs, Chairish, or One Kings Lane are other good places to hunt for your flair chair. And, never underestimate a good estate sale - you can have it refinished, polished, or reupholstered! Or even better, leave it a bit worn and tattered, adding a unique, decorative pillow for a glow-up.
And, guess what? The chair can also be brand new - just make it interesting and unexpected. That’s flair - it’s in how you mix pieces.
Design Product of the Month
In keeping with this month’s design tip, here are a few fabulous flair chairs to inspire and shop.
And, a few more…
Travel: Flair in the Air
Milan, Italy
I recently had the amazing fortune of spending three quick nights in Italy, specifically Milan. We went for design sourcing, research, and inspiration - BUT - there may have also been a Taylor Swift concert involved!
The street style, vibrant restaurants, charming shops, and the delightful surprise of a Sunday flea market brimming with old books, art, and other treasures near the Duomo all add to the city's irresistible charm.
Where I stayed
Hotels in Milan offer a blend of luxury, comfort, and style, reflecting the city's reputation as a global fashion and design hub. From opulent five-star accommodations with stunning views of the Duomo to chic boutique hotels in trendy neighborhoods, Milan's hospitality scene caters to every taste and budget.
Hotel Principe di Savoia - If hotels were cars, this would be a Bentley, but thankfully without the same sticker price. It’s historic and lovely and in a great area for walking and wandering.
Bulgari Hotel Milano - Another option; it's smaller and flair-filled but equally chic. Or, just visiting for a lunch in the outdoor garden cafe or for a Campari and soda is the best! I even love their gratis bar snacks.
Where I Ate

Dining in Milan is a rich culinary flair experience. With a diverse array of restaurants, from cozy trattorias to Michelin-starred, every meal in Milan is an opportunity to savor the city's mouth-watering food culture. I love eating my way through a city!
Giacomo - With a front-row view of the Duomo, make sure to request an outdoor table at sunset.
Morelli - The setting. The decor. The food! Years ago, I was lucky enough to be a guest at a private, intimate dinner in the kitchen. I suggest making a reservation far in advance of your visit.
Pavé Milano - A favorite for pastries and gelato, their quality is built on sourcing the best raw ingredients and controlling the lifecycle of every product.
What I Did
Fondazion Prada
In Milan, there's no shortage of things to do. Wander through the city's flea markets, charming cafes, and fashionable boutiques. Explore iconic landmarks like the Duomo and enjoy the serene beauty of Milan's parks dotted with so many mature trees. Here’s my shortlist for a quick trip.
Fondazione Prada - Built into a former distillery dating back to the 1910s, even the industrial architecture of the Prada Art Center is interesting. And, the cafe! Designed and inspired by Wes Anderson, it’s a great selfie spot. The retro sherbet color palette of the cafe is bound to make you smile. The art inside is also incredible and world-class.
Villa Necchi Campiglio - This museum, set in a former villa near the fashion district, is an icon of the 1930s deco. It’s known for elegant interiors, lush gardens, and the impressive art and design collections it showcases, offering a fascinating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Milan's elite in the early 20th century.
SHOP
La DoubleJ - Talk about flair everywhere! American, Jennifer Butler’s, fashion line and brick-and-mortar boutique merchandise in the most beautiful, colorful way. The store is ridiculously cool - the green and white patterned floor paired with vibrant multicolored wall covering - do NOT miss the downstairs area. This is the perfect spot for gift buying, kitchen accessories, jewelry boxes, and the most beautiful dresses.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II - This is one of Milan's most famous shopping streets, located in the city center. Stretching from Piazza del Duomo to Piazza San Babila, this bustling pedestrian area is lined with high-end boutiques and popular retail. Numerous cafes, restaurants, and street performers add to its lively charm.
Nilufar Gallery - To me, this place is an equal parts high-end furniture gallery and museum with vintage and antique pieces, unique modern accessories, and case goods. I loved how the shop attendant casually but knowledgeably answered my questions about an enormous deep pile Moroccan area rug with “it was formerly in one of the embassies here.” There are two locations, a smaller shop within walking distance from where we stayed, but the larger one is worth the trip. Do not miss!
Wear Your Flair
This perfect summer work outfit is ideal for hot August days. When the office dress code still calls for summer casual, this look combines professional and relaxed elements to keep you looking polished yet comfortable. Accessorize with flair and a sleek tote to make this outfit your go-to for staying cool and stylish in the office.
Flair for Wellness
What I’m loving this month…mushroom coffee.
RYZE Mushroom Coffee - I'm fascinated by the benefits of adaptogenic mushrooms for overall wellness, anxiety relief, and calm. This coffee alternative has become a staple in my routine, giving me improved focus, and sustained energy throughout the day!
Culture & Media
Binge-Worthy TV
Presumed Innocent - In one word…RIVETING. Jake Gyllenhaal will keep you on the edge of your seat for the next episode. And, the ending!

Five O’Clock Flair
In honor of my high school reunion and an ode to the '80s, this month we’re mixing a Cosmopolitan, but we’re adding a touch of flair with the inclusion of pineapple juice, giving it a refreshing and unique twist. Want to make it a mock? Skip the vodka and add club soda.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 oz vodka
1 oz pineapple juice
1/2 oz triple sec
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz cranberry juice
Pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry for garnish
Instructions:
Place a martini glass in the freezer to chill
In a cocktail shaker, combine the vodka, pineapple juice, triple sec, lime juice, and cranberry juice
Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously until well chilled, about 15-20 seconds
Strain the mixture into the chilled martini glass.
Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry on the rim of the glass
Cheers!
